Job description

Role Title: International Humanitarian Law Advisor

Role Type: Contractor (~15 hrs/wk)

Location: Remote

micro1 is engaging International Humanitarian Law Advisors to contribute to a customer project focused on the rigorous application of IHL and human-rights principles. In this role, you'll apply your expertise to help train next-generation AI systems. Your work will shape how models learn, reason, and perform through high-quality, real-world input. No prior experience in AI is required — your domain knowledge is what matters. This is an opportunity to make a tangible impact by shaping and verifying nuanced lawful/unlawful and civilian-protection boundary cases at the forefront of AI and legal reasoning.

Scope of Work

- Develop and author boundary case scenarios on international humanitarian law, civilian protection, proportionality, and prohibited conduct.

- Review and validate legal boundary lines within project taxonomies to ensure alignment with current IHL and human-rights frameworks.

- Assess AI-generated responses for legal reasoning, identification of limitations, and handling of legal uncertainty.

- Identify and flag both overly cautious refusals of legitimate queries and insufficient caution where civilian protection is critical.

- Document and provide detailed analyses of edge cases from both legal and human-rights perspectives.

- Collaborate with project teams to refine evaluation protocols and ensure consistent, high-quality input.

- Deliver clear, well-structured written and verbal feedback to inform model development and evaluation.

Preferred Qualifications

- Recognized expertise in international humanitarian law and/or international human rights law, such as a senior practitioner, advisor, or scholar.

- Demonstrated fluency in LOAC, human-rights frameworks, and civilian-protection standards.

- Experience with advisory, consultative, or teaching roles in relevant legal domains.

- Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities; cares deeply about precise, effective expression.

- Track record of documenting and analyzing complex legal scenarios, including ambiguous or edge cases.

- Background in operational advising (e.g., ICRC, UN agencies, tribunals, or commissions of inquiry) is a plus.

- Familiarity or experience with AI governance or evaluation projects is advantageous.

Process overview:

- Apply and submit your profile and complete the role’s screening questions.

- Take the AI Interview with Zara our AI Recruiter

- Screener survey, a short survey to understand your background and experience, your experience working with AI, and your approach to a brief case.

- Profile review, the team reviews your background and survey responses against the role.

- Onboarding, Talent Ops gets you set up once you’re selected.
